The OhioHealth Annual Customer Service Retreat held on April 5, 2012 rocked and I so appreciate having the opportunity to attend this year’s event.

I think that if everyone in the world could spend an hour with Sam Glenn, the world would be a better place. I’ve been reading his book, A Kick in the Attitude. I have several lines highlighted for future reference.  Some of those include:

*        If we know a positive attitude can make life better, then why doesn’t everyone have one?

*        “The truth will set you free”…but only if you buy into the truth as real, acknowledge the value of it, and do something about it. Take action!

*        Attitude isn’t everything, but it is the main thing that affects everything. (John Maxwell)

*        A kick butt attitude is like a breath of fresh air that will attract opportunities. A sour attitude is like bad breath that can clear a room in a heartbeat, repelling opportunities.

*        Nobody can choose your attitude except you. How we each utilize it is different, but it works the same way for everyone. If it’s bad, your life will become more and more empty. If it’s good, you life will be full, but it takes work.

*        Humor is like a muscle; in order for it to be effective, it has to be worked out.

I’m a firm believer in that attitude is catching. I’ve made a concerted effort in the past year to “delete” negative people from my life, even if some of them are family! I have that choice and refuse to let them bring me down to their negative level. In the cases where it’s not possible to “delete” people, such as at work, I choose to adapt the saying “kill them with kindness” to “kill them with a smile and a positive attitude.” If I smile and only say positive things around those people, hopefully the habit will wear off on them. Will I be able to change every negative person into a happy positive person? Probably not, but I can feel good about making the effort.

I think everyone should hear Sam’s message in some way.  I understand that it is a personality and culture change that won’t work for everyone…but if we can affect the attitude of just a few… “If we build it, they will come!”

Finally, but definitely not the least, I took away that a good belly-laugh at work is good for the soul, the mind, and the heart. As Charlie Chaplin said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” Attitude is infectious, and I hope that mine is worth catching!
